Cured of the new coronavirus but still not sure if you have the antibodies? You took the vaccine, but are you sure the vaccine has started working for you? You have been exposed to Covid-19 but do you know whether you are immune to it or not?

An antibody test, also known as a serological test, is a blood test that can be used to determine whether you have previously been infected with COVID-19. The presence of specific antibodies indicates that you have been exposed to the virus and your body has produced blood proteins to fight the virus. There are different types of tests used to detect Covid-19 – diagnostic tests and antibody tests.

Diagnostic test

There are currently two types of tests used to diagnose Covid-19: molecular tests and antigen tests. In molecular assays, the genetic material of the virus is identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Biological fluids are collected from a nasal or throat swab or through saliva.

Covid-19 antibody test

The immune system produces antibodies to identify and destroy harmful foreign substances (antigens) such as bacteria and viruses. The Covid-19 antibody test is carried out to detect the presence of antibodies produced in the blood to fight the coronavirus. There are two types of testing for Covid-19 antibodies: qualitative and quantitative.

Coronavirus antibody tests are performed to determine the levels of antibodies in the blood that are developed by the body's immune system against the virus.
